Vimal and Lakshmi Menon have paired up for the first time in Manjapai. Directed by debutante Naveen Raghavan, Manjapai casts Raj Kiran in a prominent role and the director has strived hard to bring out chuckles on audiences face with his performance. Over the years , Tamil cinema has portrayed relationships in a more authenticate manner. Films like Poovey Poochadava, Abhiyum Nanum, Varanam Ayiram and many other films have created magic in the 75 years of Tamil cinema history. Debut director Naveen Raghavan has taken Grand Father and grand son relationship in Manjapai, does he actually created a magic like the about said films?

Manjapai starts with the novel bonding between Venkatasamy(Rajkiran) and kiddo Tamil(Vimal) . The director has created a strong impact of Rajkiran’s characterization in the very first five minute of narration with some montages along with a typical 80’s song. Soon after the five minutes, the director fast forwards 25 years and we are seeing Vimal in an IT job and he meets a girl in Traffic signal, yes you are right of course it is the film’s heroine Karthika(Lakshmi Menon) and falls in love.
Okay, the serious question here is for how many years our heroes fall in love with a girl who does all foolish acts ? Forget the characterization of heroine, still you want to portray love at first sight that too in a hot traffic signal in Chennai?
After all the foolish and irritating episodes of our hero, our heroine gives her green signal after knowing his kind heart of helping others( For the very first time in the 75 years of Tamil cinema). Coming to the remaining episodes of Manjapai, Vimal gets an onsite offer to USA and he invites his Grand Father to Chennai. Innocent and Bold Rajkiran does various comic and good act in Chennai city, some of them affects Vimal and he even lose his onsite offer, at one point of time he yells at Rajkiran and he goes missing. What happens next forms the climax of Manjapai.
To start with, Rajkiran’s acting is full of life, he makes you cry, laugh and even teach some lessons to the society. Despite Rajkiran’s earthy performance, his characterization becomes week as the director has stereotyped for the comic/fun quotient in the film. The scene where Rajkiran raises ‘Velaiyaney Veliyaru’ slogan against USA flag doesn’t gel with his matured characterization, why to spoil such a powerful character for the sake of fun?
Discussing about the lead pairs’ performances, well they are completely miscast. Vimal as an IT guy follows the same village folk mannerism and dialogue delivery only makes him as a stereotypical actor. Lakshmi Menon as an urban girl is a total failure, her love tracks with Vimal doesn’t gel with the story. No offence, but then both Lakshmi Menon and Vimal should think twice before accepting an urban role.
Discussing about the technicalities, NR Ragunathan’s songs are decent while the BGM is good. Masani’s cinematography is adequate but editing by Deva is not up to the mark, the scene towards the prolonged climax demands a serious attention from the editor.
To conclude, Rajkiran steals the show in Manjpai, but too much of Melodrama and stereotypes spoil the show, over all Manjapai is a mixed bag.
