The year 2014 started on a dull note, but the first half ended on a very good note with the release of "Ek Villain." The first two quarters of the year remained low with only four films crossing ₹100 crore mark at the box office.
But all hopes are riding high on the big-budget films that will release in the third and fourth quarter of the year. The third quarter started on a fantastic note with "Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania" and the trend is expected to continue with the release of Salman Khan's "Kick."
Here is the list of top big banner films, which are expected to set the box office on fire:
"Kick"
The film is a remake of the Telugu blockbuster film of the same name. The film features Salman Khan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Randeep Hooda and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in important roles. Trade analysts' hopes are riding high on "Kick" as it is Salman's film releasing on Eid. Directed by Sajid Nadiadwala, it is set to release on 25 July.
"Singham Returns"
After "Kick," it is the second big-budget film releasing on 15 August. The film is a sequel of blockbuster movie "Singham" and features Ajay Devgn and Kareena Kapoor Khan in the lead roles. The trailer of the film was released last week and it went viral on social networking sites. The film is also most awaited as it marks the return of director Rohit Shetty and Devgn duo on the big screen.
"Mardaani"
The film features Rani Mukherji in the lead role and revolves around the story of human trafficking. The trailer created curiosity among audiences due to the story line. Directed by Pradeep Sarkar, the film is set to release on 22 August.
"Mary Kom"
The biopic "Mary Kom" starring Priyanka Chopra is set to release on 5 September. The film's poster was released on 15 July, which created a fan frenzy. Not only her fans, but even Bollywood celebs have given thumbs up for her look in the posters.
"Finding Fanny"
The film features an ensemble cast including Naseeruddin Shah, Dimple Kapadia, Pankaj Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor and Deepika Padukone. The trailer was released online last week and since then it has gone viral on Twitter and Facebook. With the trailer release, the film has created positive buzz in the industry.
"Ugly"
It's an upcoming psychological thriller and emotional drama directed by Anurag Kashyap. The film may not get good opening at the box office considering its genre, but it might get a good response from audiences for its brilliant script and amazing performances of the actors. "Ugly" will hit screens in India on 19 September.
"Bang Bang"
Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif starrer "Bang Bang" is one of the much awaited films of the year. The film, directed by Sidharth Anand is set to release on 2 October.
"Haider"
It features Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Tabu, Kay Kay Menon and Irrfan Khan in the lead roles. The film is directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and it's an adaptation of Shakespeare's "Hamlet." The trailer of the film has raised expectations of the movie goers. The film will clash with "Bang Bang" at the box office on 2 October.
"Happy New Year"
The film, starring Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role is all set to release during Diwali, but the makers are yet to announce the exact release date. Apart from SRK, the film also features Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood and Boman Irani in the lead roles.
"Bombay Velvet"
The film features Anushka Sharma and Ranbir Kapoor in the lead roles and is directed by Anurag Kashyap. The film also features director-producer Karan Johar and is expected to be an epic saga.
"P.K."
Again a film starring Aamir Khan is releasing during the Christmas. Last year, "Dhoom 3" created several records and this year "P.K." is expected to do the same. The film is directed by Rajkumar Hirani, who has previously directed blockbuster films like "3 Idiots" and "Munna Bhai M.B.B.S." among others.
