After the success of Bhootnath in 2008, Amitabh Bachchan is back with the sequel in Bhootnath returns. Also starring Boman Irani, Sanjay Mishra and child actor Partha, this film has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it turns out to be.
Story:
The 60-year old ghost Bhoothnath(Amitabh Bachchan) returns on earth after he is embarrassed in heaven by his fellow ghosts for his inability to scare a little kid. He is now given a task to scare about a dozen of kids. But as soon as he reaches earth, he comes across a fearless slum kid, Akhrot (Partha), who only can see him.
Soon the two become business partners, where they are given a task of removing the spirits from a haunted building in return of good money. During the course, they are called by a local politician Bhau (Boman Irani) who asks them to vacant a haunted building. But it is later that they come to know about the truth behind the spirits living in the building and Bhau’s corrupt doing.
This is when Bhoothnath decides to trouble Bhau by fighting him in local elections. Now how will a dead man stand in a political battle. Will he be able to beat the corrupt politician and clean the country. That forms the rest of the story…
Plus Points:
They say that, Amitabh Bachchan’s name is just enough for any film. It is so true and how. The megastar has all the qualities that makes a movie a delight and one of it is his sheer presence.
Big B is fantastic in every scene, and makes sure to steel the show with his act. Another treat of the movie is the child actor Partha. His ability as an actor is visible from the very first scene. Partha is a brilliant actor and from emotions to drama, he portrays every scene with prowess.
Boman Irani is best at what he does. He portrays the role of an evil politician amazingly. Another actor in the film, Sanjay Mishra should get an applause. He has an amazing comic timing and is a treat to watch. The concept of the movie is novel and interesting.
Minus Points:-
The over-emphasis on the political scenario of India, in the second half could have been cut short a little bit, as it gets tedious. Climax of the movie is quite predictable and the director could have worked a little hard on it.
The part before the climax gets a too filmy with the director portraying the child actor a bit too matured than his actual age. Last part of the film is abrupt and at one point makes you feel like you are watching a documentary.
Another negative point of the film is that it is slow-paced and takes a long time to end.
Technical Aspects:
Nitesh Tiwari’s direction is decent as he paces up the movie at the exact point where the prequel was left, but he fails to entertain the audiences to an extent that was needed.
Nitesh has shown the ghost and child relation with the similar innocence as shown in the prequel. The songs of the film are good and are placed perfectly in the plot.
The first half of the film is hilarious, with some light-hearted funny moments, but the second half gets boring and political. The cinematography is good as the camera very well covers the slum areas of Mumbai, while the editing is sharp.
Dialogues in the first half are funny, but lower the bar in the second half.

On the whole, Bhootnath Returns has some extremely light-hearted moments which will tickle your funny bone and some excellent performances. But an over-dose of the current political scenario, may bore you to the core. Watch this film if you have nothing else to do.
