Dhanush's 25th film "Velai Illa Pattathari" ("VIP") has received decent reviews from the critics.
"VIP" is a romantic action entertainer, directed by cinematographer-turned-director Velraj. It also has Amala Paul, Vivek, Saranya Ponvannan and Samuthirakani in supporting roles.
The film's music is composed by Anirudh and Dhanush has produced the film under his Wunderbar Films banner.
"Velai Illa Pattathari" deals with the issue of unemployment. Raghuvaran (Dhanush) has been jobless for four years after completing his bachelor's degree in civil engineering. His father (Samuthirakani) considers him as a loser, but Raghuvaran gets support from his mother. Whereas, his brother Karthik earns well in an IT company.
Raghuvaran falls in love with his neighbour Shalini (Amala Paul) who also has a good job and earns a hefty pay packet. Till the interval point, the film focuses on these characters after which it is all about how the unemployed Raghuvaran rises up against all odds.
Critics have given positive feedback for the film, terming it as a mass entertainer that is sure to impress Dhanush fans.

"There is a sense of 'deja vu' with the first half as we have seen Dhanush in such characters in movies like Polladhavan, Yaradi Nee Mohini and Padikathavan to name a few. But the entertainment quotient never dips and Dhanush keeps his fans hooked through something or the other, with Anirudh's crowd pleasing chartbusters leading the way," according to Behindwoods Review Board.
"Dhanush's comic timing is impeccable and his banter with mom Saranya Ponvannan and girlfriend Amala Paul takes the movie forward merrily. His 'dabba vandi' is a character in itself and we make a connect with this cute moped straightaway," the website stated.
"Velraj as a director has been overparticular to bring out a convincing mass entertainer, losing track in the process. Though he must be appreciated for his sharp dialogues which are well etched with facts and figures, the treatment of the script isn't mature, things unfold onscreen just as how you have them worked out in your head. VIP ends up fetching all essentials of an entertainer, just that it fails to have them in the right proportions," said Siddarth Srinivas of Cinemalead.
"'Vellaiyilla Pattathari' is a film for entertainment seekers of all ages, and a masala that aptly explains the predicament of the unemployed. With this, Velraj leaves behind a message that staying focused never fails," stated Indiaglitz.
