Sajid Khan's "Humshakals" has performed fantastic business in its opening weekend, despite getting negative reviews from critics and subjected to backlash on social media sites.
"Humshakals" minted ₹40.13 crore in its first weekend at the Indian box office. The film has surpassed the debut weekend collections of Arjun Kapoor-Alia Bhatt's "2 States," which had collected ₹38.06 crore. However, the comic caper failed to beat the first weekend collections of "Holiday – A Solider is Never Off Duty" (₹41.32 crore), "Gunday" (₹43.93 crore) and "Jai Ho" (₹60.68 crore). "Humshakals" has emerged as the fourth highest opening weekend grosser of 2014.
Sajid Khan's past releases have garnered mostly negative reviews from critics. Despite the poor feedback, his films like "Heyy Babyy", "Housefull" and "Housefull 2" had performed well at the box office. Multi starrer "Housefull 2," which hit theatres in 2012, has even made it to the elite ₹100 crore club. When "Himmatwala" released in 2013, it is not just the critics, even the audience tore apart the film. As a result, the action comedy entertainer was a big box office debacle.
After the failure of "Himmatwala," Sajid moved back to the genre that he is comfortable with – comedy. He launched "Humshakals," a comic caper with Saif Ali Khan-Riteish Deshumkh-Ram Kapoor in triple roles. Critics panned the multi starrer and Sajid became the butt of jokes on social media circles. However, the negative feedback did not have much impact on the film's performance. The film is simply unstoppable at the Indian box office.
The film opened well on the first day by earning ₹12.50 crore. It maintained a steady run on Saturday and raked in ₹12.59 crore. Interestingly, the film's business skyrocketed on Sunday with its collections surpassing the ₹15-crore mark. It had a strong first weekend (20-22 June) and the collections amounted to ₹40.13 crore.
It needs to be seen whether "Humshakals" will be able to sustain its business during the weekdays. The comedy entertainer has got only one-week open run prior to the release of much-awaited Hindi film "Ek Villain," Hollywood biggie "Transformers: Age of Extinction" and the Punjabi film "Punjab 1984" on Friday.

"Humshakals," produced by Vashu Bhagnani, is made on a huge budget. The film has to perform consistently during weekdays to cover the costs.
