When a remake of Sujoy Ghosh-directed 'Kahaani' was announced with Shekar Kammula, not many expected that Anamika would not be a (fake) pregnant woman. Since he thought the character needs no sympathy (admittedly), he shows her as a "normal" lady. However, he seems to have missed the wood for the trees. Mrs. Bagchi (Vidya Balan, in the original) may have evoked sympathy to begin with, but in retrospect her mind game scorched everything else. There is an inherent advantage which such scripts enjoy: the audience would be tempted to watch the film all over again because he knows that, having known the real identity of Mrs. Bagchi, he would have a different experience while watching her for a second time.
In all fairness to Kammula, he manages to dish out an entertaining and engaging thriller film without tweaking the original beyond pale. The plot is puzzle-like, but it doesn't need the alert Sarathi (Vaibhav) to explain it to us as Parambrata Chatterjee's character did in the original.
Anamika (Nayanatara) arrives in Hyderabad in search of her missing husband. After lodging a missing complaint with the local police, she checks in a self-styled '5 Star' hotel in the Old City area, as it was the same room in which her missing husband had boarded before he went missing suddenly one week before. She finds help from Sarathi, who takes special interest in her case. As they try to make progress, the CI's suspicious behaviour keeps us guessing about a possible conspiracy. The criminal angle is writ large in everything from a sathvik-looking, tilak-sporting, stout uncle who snuffs out lives after saying 'Namaskaram' with a smile to constant reference to one terror suspect Milind Damanji.
While the first half seems to go at a leisurely pace despite giving an indication of some danger to Anamika's life, it is only in the second half that the film really becomes racy. In dealing with an adaptation, Kammula shows some knack, although the 'innovation' is more of adulteration than healthy tweaking.
While Mrs. Bhagchi's uniqueness lied in her uncharacteristic visage, Anamika is less confounding. She is pretty much overwhelmed by Nayanatara the star actor, especially in the shots played simultaneously along with the end credits. The voice-over in the original put Mrs. Bhagchi on a high pedestal; the whole juxtaposition with the Durga Puja, whose symbolism is powerful, made 'Kahaani' one of the most exciting climaxes in recent times. On the other hand, the two cops Pasupathi and Vaibhav are not used to elevate the heroine to another level.
The film doesn't give us an incentive to enjoy it by relooking at it afresh backwards after the climax.
The old city doesn't look as authentic as one would have expected. The art work is fine in some of the scenes, though.
Pasupathy does a fantastic job as an upright cop. He adds a zing to the second half with his authentic portrayal of a stubborn and aggressive investigator. Naresh as the Home Minister with a stake in the Ajay Shastri case is a surprise. Vaibhav and Nayanatara fail to strike a rapport.
Nayanatara does a fine job and looks fresh in this role. She vulnerable now, brave-hearted next. She carries her role with aplomb. Vaibhav falls short of expectations, while Harshvardhan Rane in a cameo falls flat.
MM Keeravani breathes life into the proceedings with his apt BG music. It's one of the best features of the film. The cinematography is ok.
Verdict: Watch Anamika for its refreshing appeal. If you have watched Kahaani, invariable comparisons will result in disappointment with the adaptation.
